Kern Community Foundation gives four Women’s and Girls’ Fund grants
Shalanda Davis-Layton and LaShaka Pleasant Davis started Charmed & Chosen Inc. four years ago as two mothers concerned about the future of youth who were apprehensive about navigating a post-COVID world.
They could not have imagined four years ago that they would be one of the four Women’s and Girls’ Fund grant recipients selected by the Kern Community Foundation to support causes like their mission.
The founders of Charmed & Chosen used their $25,000 grant toward a 10-week summer program for 32 girls, teaching them life skills such as financial literacy, career guidance and the importance of tending to mental health.
Pleasant Davis said they were extremely blessed to be a grant recipient as the money gave Charmed & Chosen more resources to spread the love.
“It’s not where you start, it’s how you finish and we’re so much stronger as a community,” Pleasant Davis said.
Davis-Layton said the program showed the girls that they were important and that they are not alone. She said she did not always have the same resources growing up and wanted to inspire and support girls to be whatever they wanted to be.
“You can be whatever you want to be but you have to be able to take care of yourself first and your mindset is your power source,” Davis-Layton said.
